The picturesque capital of the island built around Koutavos lagoon. First stop is St. Theodore Lighthouse ,only a few minutes away from Argostoli located on an artificial peninsula. It is a round construction supported by 20 ancient style columns, built in 1928.
Next is Katavothres , a rare geological sight, considered a mystery for many geologists and scientists.Go forward we come across "De Bosset" bridge, stone built almost 2 centuries ago in 1813, almost 1 km long and connects Argostoli with the other side of the bay.
St George's castle, built in the 12th century under the Byzantine reign.It expands to 16.000 square meters and the view from top is magnificent.
Divino winery since 1996, located in Pesada in a contemporary complex. It includes a museum style showroom and a wine bar. Amongst the production there are 12 different types of wines and 3 special types of vinegar.Leaving the best for last, we couldn't skip Makris gialos beach only five minutes away from the city center.
Activities
On August 12th it was hit by an earthquake and in a period of 28 seconds the island actually rose 60 centimeters and in the process demolished almost every man made structure on it.The earthquake caused over 100,000 Kefalonians to leave the island for the United States, Canada, Australia and other far away places while the rest remained to pick up the pieces and rebuild their homes and businesses.
